fbpx International Day of Women and Girls in Science Celebrations | University of Kabianga | Innovation and Excellence

On Friday 10th February 2023, the  Directorate of Gender and Development and the UoK Gender Club in collaboration with other stakeholders, observed the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated annually on February 11th, at the University of Kabianga Main Campus. This year’s theme is “Innovative, Demonstrate, Elevate, Advance – Bringing communities forward for a Sustainable and Equitable development".

Students from high and junior high schools throughout Kericho County were invited by the team, which was led by Dr. Phanice Wangila, Director of the Center for Gender and Development. To further advance gender equity and women's empowerment in Kenya, the young girls were urged to look past gender stereotypes, pursue STEM subjects, and end the gender gap in science.

Dr. Wangila  noted that by celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, it allows people to honor women’s significant achievements in science and place a much-needed focus on girls entering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. 

In his speech, Prof. Omwenga, DVC (AS&A), urged the young females to pursue STEM fields because they are open to people of all genders and not just men.

The Chief Guest Eva Kombaa advised the girls that while the road to STEM is paved with difficulties, it is nevertheless passable. She therefore urged them to believe in the possibility of anything and to be brave and fearless.

In addition to the inspirational speeches, there was showcasing of STEM Exhibitions from the stakeholders and panel discussions on STEM where the studets were given a chance to engage on a question and answer session with the panelists.
