Directorate of Gender and Development at the University of Kabianga under the leadership of Dr. Phanice Wangila marked the International Women’s Day Celebration on 10th March, 2021 at the Main Campus under the theme “Choose to Challenge-Education as a Tool for Achieving Equality in Covid-19 World”.

The event was attended by University of Kabianga staff, students and guests from the Kericho County Woman representative office and Kericho County.

The University's Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic and Students Affairs, Prof. Elijah Omwenga graced the occasion. In his speech, he said International Women's Day gives an opportunity to consider how to accelerate the 2030 Agenda, build momentum for the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

Ms. Amazon Koech, an advocate of the high court of Kenya was the chief guest at the event. She gave her keynote speech on women as the pillar of the society. Ms. Koech emphasized the importance of education to women and girls. She asked women to take education seriously and challenge the myth that affirmative action is there to help them. “Education is the only thing that will put you in that position and be recognized,” said Ms. Koech.

The activities of the day included tree planting, modeling and dancing by students, and general entertainment.
