This is a collaborative effort between the national government, County Government of Kericho, University of Kabianga and government agencies dealing with environment such as NEMA, WARMA and KFS.

PROGRESS

The first consultative workshop was held on 29th February 2016 which resolved to form three (3) thematic areas and three (3) pilot areas. These include; 

  1. Forestry – Chepsagogo Pilot area
  2. Water – Kiptule Swamp Pilot area
  3. Sanitation – Sondu Town Pilot area.

As per the minutes, these thematic areas were created as sub-committees with members representing the above mentioned institutions and interim chairpersons who were mandated to organize the second and consecutive meeting. University members appointed by the Dean were to be sub-committee secretaries in each thematic area. The agenda of the meetings were to discuss and implement the matrix developed during the first matrix.

The Forest Sub-committee held its second meeting on 8th April chaired by Kenya Forest Service, Kericho Ecosystem Conservator. The meeting resolved to organize for a tree planting day at Chepsagogo on 29th April 2016. Tree planting day was organized on 29th April 2016 at Chepsagogo Community Water plant. The Deputy County Commissioner, Ward Administrator represented the national and county governments respectively while staff from the School of Natural Resource represented the University. A total of 766 trees were planted.

The Water Sub-committee held its second meeting on 27th April 2016 at the University of Kabianga. The meeting was chaired by the County Director of Environment, County Government of Kericho. The meeting resolved to do the following among others.

  • Site visit at Kiptule Swamp on 5th May 2016 – this was later pushed to 10th May 2016
  • WARMA and NEMA to demarcate the riparian reserve
  • To commemorate the World Environment Day at Kiptule Swamp

The site visit at Kiptule took place on the 10th of May 2016 and was coordinated by NEMA,WARMA and Ministry of Environment, County Government of Kericho. The meeting was chaired by the County Director of Environment, County Government of Kericho. The meeting resolved to do the following among others. Site visit at Sondu Town on 10th May 2016 – this has been pushed to 17th May 2016 To commemorate the World Environment Day in Sondu Town CONCLUSION This is a noble task worth continuous support from all stakeholders. With this kind of extension initiatives, we hope to achieve a lot in due course to safeguard integrity of the environment around us and beyond. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I thank all members directly involved in this work from within and outside the University. We acknowledge the University of Kabianga Council and Management for the heart and support they give to environmental issues in the institution and the country. We also appreciate the zeal shown by the strategic stakeholders in this extension work.
