Professor Elijah I. Omwenga is the newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academics and Student Affairs. Prof. Omwenga takes over from Prof. Kibett, who has been acting in that capacity.

Prof. Elijah I. Omwenga holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi in the area of Information Systems. The new DVC brings his experience in leadership and management to a number of Boards that he serves in. He is a Commissioner at the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation and the Secretary for the Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR). Elijah is also the President of the African Association for Teacher Educators and the African representative to the World Forum for Associations of Teacher Educators (WFATE).

Prof.Omwenga has previously served as the Chairman of the African Virtual Open Resources and Initiatives Organisation (AVOIR) and a board member of the Kenya Education Network (KENET). He also served as the University of Nairobi ICT Director between 2006 and 2012. Elijah is a consultant for UNESCO in the Science, Technology and Innovation program and also for The Commission for University Education (CUE) in the curriculum review and accreditation division. Professor Omwenga is not only a seasoned Software Engineer with twenty (20) years experience, but also an author of over 25 scientific papers in reputable journals and publications, tens of technical papers, and an author of three books.

He is engaged in research on deployment of low bandwidth mobile/electronic/web-based applications as well as integration of ICT in learning institutions. Professor Omwenga has designed, developed and deployed over 6 large ICT projects in the region including the first fully-fledged e-learning system in Africa (wedusoft) that was adopted for use in a number of regional Universities in the last decade.
