UoK launch Short Course on Gender Mainstreaming for Responsive Governance
On Wednesday 25th March, 2026 the University of Kabianga Directorate of Gender and Development, led by Director Prof. Phanice Wangila successfully conducted a transformative short course on Gender Mainstreaming for Responsive Governance. This programme was meticulously designed to address historical and systemic gaps in representation by equipping participants with the tools to integrate gender perspectives into policy formulation, strategic planning and budgetary processes. By aligning with the Constitution of Kenya and the Global Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), the initiative serves as a practical roadmap for achieving a society where both men and women have equal access to opportunities and the power to influence administrative and economic authority.
The occasion was graced by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Student Affairs) Prof. Dr. Frederick N. Kasilly, who represented the University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eric Koech(PhD;MBS). In attendance were 71 participants, including members of Gender Mainstreaming Committee, the University of Kabianga Gender Club, some University staff and Board of Management (BoM) members from over 15 schools. These stakeholders engaged in a vital discourse regarding the importance of ensuring that diverse needs are articulated and met through gender-responsive strategies.
The Vice-Chancellor’s remarks, delivered during the closing ceremony, highlighted the University’s proactive stance through the establishment of the Directorate of Gender and Development, which continues to spearhead awareness and integration across all institutional levels to change attitudes and inculcate an engendered work culture.
The programme also touched on the vital importance of breaking stereotypes in professional fields, citing the legacy of trailblazers like Marie Curie to inspire a new generation of women and girls to pursue excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) besides leadership roles.
The successful completion of this training underscores a broader mission to foster a culture of meritocracy where talent is recognized regardless of gender. By empowering individuals to challenge traditional biases, the University is actively contributing to a more responsive governance framework that values every voice and ensures that young minds feel empowered to explore limitless possibilities.
