UoK Staff Wellness Day 2026
The University of Kabianga held its Wellness Day on Friday March 27th, 2026 at the University Pavilion under the theme "My Health, My Wealth". Organized by the Registrar Administration and the Health Unit Departments, the event featured a keynote address from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Administration & Finance) Prof. Isaac Naibei. The speech was delivered on his behalf by Dr. Ronald Rop, the Director of the Board of Graduate Studies (BGS). The remarks emphasized that mental health serves as the essential foundation for productivity, creativity and meaningful relationships, urging the university community to normalize conversations around emotional well-being and to prioritize self-care without guilt. This institutional commitment aims to foster an environment where both staff and students can thrive professionally, academically and emotionally.
The programme included specialized sessions led by facilitators such as Clinical Psychologist Dr. Victor Korir, who provided sensitization on mental health alongside sessions on HIV/AIDS and clinical screenings for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) conducted by the Health Unit team. Participants explored critical topics such as GAD-7 anxiety, depression and the cycles of burnout. A significant portion of the discussion focused on understanding relapse, identifying it as a return to unhappy coping habits or "regression" during periods of intense pressure. Attendees learnt to recognize warning signs like constant fatigue and social withdrawal while discussing practical prevention strategies such as identifying personal triggers, maintaining a "Plan B" and fostering a strong support system to ensure no one suffers in silence.
Ultimately, the day served as a call to action for the community to view seeking help as a sign of strength rather than weakness. By encouraging open dialogue and sharing practical stress-management strategies, the university seeks to ensure the sustained mental wellness of its members. The event concluded with an appeal for everyone to remain intentional about their well-being, recognizing the mind as their greatest asset and to continue looking out for one another within the supportive campus community.
