Kisii University Benchmarks Gender Mainstreaming Initiatives at University of Kabianga

A delegation from Kisii University has commended the University of Kabianga for its strong and visible progress in gender mainstreaming during a recent benchmarking visit.
The three-member team, led by Dr. Rose Otieno, Director of Gender at Kisii University, was received by their counterparts at the University of Kabianga for a knowledge-sharing session aimed at strengthening gender-related initiatives in higher education.
During the visit, the Director of Gender at the University of Kabianga presented an overview of the institution’s gender mainstreaming framework. The presentation highlighted the committee’s composition, key activities, achievements, challenges, and best practices that have contributed to its success.
The University of Kabianga outlined its ongoing efforts in promoting inclusivity through awareness campaigns, policy implementation, and institutional collaboration.
Speaking during the session, Dr. Otieno expressed appreciation to the host institution for the warm reception and openness in sharing experiences.
She noted that Kisii University’s Gender Mainstreaming Committee adopts a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together representatives from security, legal services, student affairs, and academic departments.
Dr. Otieno observed that both universities undertake similar initiatives, including:
- Community outreach programmes
- Celebration of international and national gender-related days
- Sensitization and awareness campaigns
- Support for vulnerable members of the community
- Research and survey activities on gender issues
She further revealed that Kisii University has already established a lactation centre for staff, with plans underway to set up a similar facility for students.
Dr. Otieno emphasized that Kisii University selected the University of Kabianga for benchmarking due to its notable impact and visibility in advancing gender mainstreaming efforts.
Both teams acknowledged that the visit provided a valuable platform for mutual learning, exchange of ideas, and strengthening institutional capacity in promoting gender equality.
The engagement underscored the importance of collaboration among universities in enhancing inclusive policies and practices that support both staff and students.
