World Bamboo Day Celebration
On September 18, 2025, the University of Kabianga proudly joined the world in celebrating World Bamboo Day, a global initiative recognizing the significance of bamboo in promoting environmental sustainability, economic empowerment and climate resilience.
This year’s celebration was honored by the presence of the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Hon. Deborah Barasa Mulongo, who graciously led the day's activities. Her visit marked a pivotal moment in the University's ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Hon. Mulongo was warmly welcomed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Kabianga, Prof. Eric Koech (Ph.D, MBS), together with the Chairperson of the University Council, Prof. Bosire Mwebi Monari. Their leadership continues to steer the University towards impactful research, innovation and active participation in national development agendas.
Also gracing the occasion were senior officials from the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) led by the Chairperson, Titus Kipkoech Korir who was appointed by President Ruto in October 2023 and whose collaboration plays a vital role in promoting bamboo as a strategic resource for Kenya’s green economy.
The event featured a range of activities, including keynote speeches, bamboo exhibitions, academic discussions and tree planting sessions. These engagements highlighted the versatile applications of bamboo from environmental conservation and land restoration to sustainable construction and income generation for rural communities.
As the University of Kabianga, we take pride in contributing to Kenya’s environmental goals and reaffirm our commitment to advancing research, innovation and community engagement in bamboo development.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the dignitaries, partners, faculty, students, and community members who participated in making this celebration a resounding success. Together, we are fostering a future that is greener, more resilient and full of promise. Environmental conservation saves the future.
